22 JulÂ鶹´«Ã½Ó³» medicine student selected by Harvard for cardiovascular research
KUALA LUMPUR: Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» University Doctor of Medicine student Chen Wei Chung is currently conducting endocrine-based research at Harvard University, exploring the hormonal mechanisms behind cardiovascular injuries.
Selected by Harvard under Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»¡¯s Star Trek programme, the 22-year-old is working on research that could transform how communities prevent and manage cardiovascular disease.
¡°By investigating how the hormone Aldosterone influences cardiovascular health across sexes, this field of research provides crucial insight into mechanisms of blood pressure regulation and heart injury.
It paves the way for more accurate prevention, earlier diagnosis and more effective, targeted therapies¡ªbringing us closer to a future where every heart can be better protected at every stage of life.¡±
Wei Chung credits Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» for laying the groundwork for his journey. ¡°The foundation I received at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»¡ªespecially in laboratory skills and research methods ¨C was crucial,¡± he shares.
He highlights the value of hands-on training and university sponsorship in preparing him for this global challenge.
Inspired by Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences dean Prof Dr Cheah Shiau Chuen¡¯s research in nasal region cancer, Wei Chung realised the impact that dedicated medical research can have.
¡°Her work made me realise the impact one can make in medicine through dedicated inquiry,¡± he says.
At Harvard, Wei Chung is guided by Prof Gordon Williams, who is also a visiting professor at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³».
He describes the experience as both encouraging and transformative.
¡°The professors here are incredibly willing to listen and actively guide young researchers throughout their journey.
¡°The environment is dynamic, conducive, and deeply supportive¡ªand when combined with the inspiring work of others in the field, it truly fosters innovation,¡± he adds.
Wei Chung is enjoying his final month in Boston, Massachusetts, and looks forward to returning home in Aug 2025.
